Fungus-resistant varities for white wine

Fungus-resistant grape varieties, often abbreviated as "piwi" (pilzwiderstandsfähig in German), are created through the skilful application of natural breeding methods. This involves transferring the natural fungal resistances of American wild grapevines to European noble grapevines, thereby achieving a fusion of their characteristic traits. With the help of precise breeding and careful selection, novel fungus-resistant grape varieties are thus created that not only show remarkable resistance to fungal diseases, but also guarantee excellent wine quality.

The greatest strength of cultivating fungus-resistant grape varieties is that, compared to traditional varieties, a significant reduction in the required plant protection measures is made possible. Depending on the infection pressure, plant protection can be reduced by up to 80 %, which leads to savings in labour and costs for plant protection products. In addition, the environment is protected and CO² emissions are minimised, while positive effects on the conservation of beneficial organisms and the reduction of soil compaction are achieved. Fungus-resistant grapevine varieties prove to be extremely useful for organic viticulture and conventional vine cultivation.
