Fungus-resistant varities for red wine
Fungus-resistant grape varieties, often abbreviated as "piwi" (pilzwiderstandsfähig in German), are created through the skilful application of natural breeding methods. American wild vines, which have natural fungal resistance, are crossed with European noble vines, resulting in a fusion of their characteristic traits. With the help of precise breeding and careful selection, new grape varieties are created that not only show remarkable resistance to fungal diseases, but also guarantee outstanding wine quality.
The greatest strength of cultivating fungus-resistant grape varieties is that they enable a significant reduction in the necessary plant protection measures compared to traditional varieties. Depending on the infection pressure, plant protection can be reduced by up to 80%, which leads to savings in labour and costs for plant protection products.
In addition, the environment is protected and CO² emissions are minimised, while at the same time positive effects on the conservation of beneficial organisms and the reduction of soil compaction are achieved. Fungus-resistant grape varieties are proving to be extremely useful for both organic viticulture and the conventional cultivation of vines.
In some cases, the innovative varieties differ significantly in terms of resistance performance and other viticultural and oenological characteristics. When selecting fungus-resistant grape varieties, it is important for each winery to individually assess which variety suits the vineyard site and site characteristics, as well as which vinification style and marketing strategy should be realised.
