Calardis Blanc
Add to wish listOrigin: Calardis Blanc is a white, fungus-resistant new variety of the Julius Kühn-Institut (Institut für Rebenzüchtung Geilweilerhof). The variety name is derived from a historical name of the Geilweilerhof.
Interbreeding: The two breeding lines Calardis Musqué (Bacchus x Seyval Blanc) and Seyve Villard 39-639 were used as crossing partners. The granting of the variety protection took place in January 2018 and the seed legal approval and thus the entry in the German variety list took place in March 2020.
Characteristics: The growth is upright and the leaf wall not dense. The time of bud burst as well as the harvest maturity are comparable to Riesling. The yield is medium similar to Riesling with about 160 kg/ar. The variety combines various resistances against powdery mildew, downy mildew and black rot with excellent cultivation characteristics. According to the breeder, up to 80 % fungicides can be saved.
Resistance:
Grape: The grape and berry size is medium and has a loose cluster structure. The variety has a muscat-like colouring of the unshaded berries, while the back of the grape often remains yellow-green despite ripeness. It is also striking that the grapes of Calardis Blanc have so far hardly been damaged by sunburn even in very dry and hot years.
Wine: The "piwi"-wine has a finesse-rich aroma of passion fruit, blood orange and freshly cut apple paired with a delicate, finely aromatic bouquet and is characterised by a spritzy acidity, which also makes it well-suited as a base wine for sparkling wine. The wine most closely resembles Riesling.
