Carillon (FR 628-2005r)
Add to wish listOrigin: The new fungus-resistant red wine grape variety Carillon (FR 628-2005r) was bred in 2005 at the Staatlichen Weinbauinstitut Freiburg as part of a highly resistant series of crosses. As part of the process for plant variety protection at the European Plant Variety Office CPVO in Angers (France), the WBI decided on the name ‘Carillon’.
Interbreeding: Bronner x Mtp 3179-90-7
Carillon is the first variety from a highly resistant series of crosses with the wild species Muscadinia, which originates from warm and humid Florida. The successful introduction of this wild species into Carillon is expected to significantly improve resistance to powdery mildew based on the existing resistance loci, compared to previous PIWI crosses.
Characteristics: The variety is characterised by an upright, medium-strong growth and forms only very few side shoots. The PIWI variety buds late, about 10 days after the Pinot Noir, but reaches blossom time shortly before it. The tendency to couluring and susceptibility to grape stem rot are low. However, due to a slower development of the must weight, it ripens ten days later than the Pinot Noir. Thanks to the robust berry skin, the variety has shown excellent resistance to the cherry vinegar fly (Drosophila suzukii) in cultivation to date. Carillon yields 80-110 kg/a at 85-100 degrees Oechsle. Overall, the grape variety is extremely robust due to the wild species that have been crossed into it.
Resistance:
Grape: The grapes are medium-sized, usually compact and carry slightly larger, round, blue berries with a very robust berry skin.
Wine: The red wine is very fruity and aromatic with intense cherry and berry aromas. The colour is very intense, and on the palate the wine is soft and full-bodied at the same time.
Cultivation: The fungus-resistant red wine variety requires very good vineyard sites due to its late ripeness.
