Origin: Baron is a fungus-resistant red wine variety newly bred in 1983 from the Staatlichen Weinbauinstitut Freiburg (WBI).

Cross: The grape variety was crossed from Cabernet Sauvignon x Bronner.

Characteristics: The grape variety shows similarities to Pinot Noir. Bud burst occurs at the same time as Pinot Noir, as does flowering. The berries begin to color shortly before Pinot Noir and are ready for harvest a few days before it. The risk of couluring is increased and the grape variety shows low susceptibility to grape stem rot. Yields are in the range of 115 to 135 kg/a, but can be significantly lower due to the tendency to couluring. The must weight corresponds to that of the Pinot Noir and the susceptibility to rot is very low.

Resistance:

Downy mildew: niedrig mittel hoch very high

Powdery mildew: niedrig mittel high sehr hoch

Botrytis: niedrig mittel hoch very high

Grape: The grapes are medium size, elongated shape and loosened. The berries are medium in size and blue-black in color.

Wine: It is a fruity red wine variety with intense color and fruity bouquet. This variety is characterized by rich tannins and its taste is similar to Pinot Noir. Baron delights with a wide range of fruit aromas, ranging from currant to raspberry, cherry, blackberry and wild berry.

Cultivation: The piwi-variety Baron requires good vineyard sites with sufficient ripening time. The variety has almost the same site requirements as the Pinot Noir.
