Chasselas

Origin: Chasselas is an old grape variety that has spread all over the world. An indication of the Origin is almost conjectural due to the lack of relevant documents. The millennia-long spread of the grape variety by numerous peoples along various routes over and around the central Mediterranean has provided ample opportunities for propagation. Notable wine production with Chasselas has developed in western Switzerland and in the Markgräflerland.

Characteristics: The white wine variety is sensitive to cold when in blossom. The grape variety ripens medium-early in September and can produce high yields. It is very susceptible to fungal diseases and grape stem rot.

Grape: The grapes are large, elongated and slightly shouldered. The berries are large, round, green-yellow in colour and brownish on the sunny side. The berry skin is thin but firm. The taste of the berries is juicy and crunchy sweet.

Wine: The wine is light, drinkable, mild and very digestible. They are excellent pub wines and go well with many dishes, depending on how they are matured. They taste best when drunk young.

Cultivation: The Chasselas requires a wind-protected, medium-good vineyard site, as the blossom is somewhat sensitive to cold. The soil should be fertile, deep and not too dry; chalky soils also suit it.

Clones

We carry the proven quality clones Dreher 50 and Dreher 26 as standard in our variety programme.

  • The clone Dreher 26 has above-average frost resistance, loose, shouldered grapes and a good yield reliability with high yields.

  • The clone Dreher 50 is also above average frost resistant, has a good yield stability and low susceptibility to botrytis, in addition the grapes are slightly less shouldered. The selection goal for both clones was that a certain maximum yield should not be exceeded in order to prevent quality losses and costly yield regulations.
