Origin: The Johanniter is a fungus-resistant breeding of Johannes Zimmermann (Staatliches Weinbauinstitut Freiburg). The name was given in honour of Johannes Zimmermann, the former head of vine breeding at the Freiburg Viticultural Institute. He had the foresight to breed fungus-resistant grape varieties.

Interbreeding: Riesling x (Seyve Villard 12-481 x (Ruländer x Gutedel))

Characteristics: The leaves are medium sized, dull green, five-lobed and little arched. The PIWI variety shoots medium early, the ripening time is late. Johanniter grows medium strong, upright and has a good wood maturity.

Downy mildew: niedrig medium hoch sehr hoch

Powdery mildew: niedrig medium hoch sehr hoch

Botrytis: niedrig medium hoch sehr hoch

Grape: Grapes are medium sized, compact and slightly shouldered. The berries are medium sized, yellow-green and have medium skin stability.

Wine: The PIWI wines are powerful, fruity with lively acidity and have great similarities with Riesling. They achieved very good ratings in Riesling comparison tastings. The variety is also very well suited for sparkling base wines.

Cultivation: We recommend planting in good to medium vineyard sites.
