Origin: Donauriesling is an Interbreeding from the vine breeding of the "Höhere Bundeslehranstalt und Bundesamt für Wein- und Obstbau" in Klosterneuburg under the direction of Ferdinand Regner.

Interbreeding: Riesling × Fr 589-54 (Seyve Villard 12-481 × Freiburg 153- 39 (Pinot Gris × Weißer Gutedel)).

Characteristics: The variety has a semi-erect to erect shoot attitude with strong growth. Bud burst and ripeness of the grapes are late. Donauriesling produces medium yields (but higher than Riesling) and has very good winter frost resistance. It has a low tendency to burst berries after autumn precipitation and tolerates drought well. A strength in terms of wine characteristics is the pronounced small berry size, which brings considerable advantages in terms of extract. A disadvantage is the late ripeness of the variety and that the berries are sensitive to heat and sunburn.

Resistance:

Downy mildew: niedrig mittel hoch very high

Powdery mildew: niedrig mittel hoch very high

Botrytis: niedrig mittel high sehr hoch

Grape: The grape of Donauriesling is medium sized (14-18 cm), medium dense with a cylindrical shape. The berries have a thickened skin, which contributes positively to the grape health. Smaller berries give the grape a loosened appearance. They have 1-3 wings.

Wine: The varietal relationship to Riesling is clearly recognisable in the wine. The fruity and acid-rich young wines must ripen sufficiently before they are drunk. The wine qualities were tested sensory for years in Klosterneuburg and often judged equally good and sometimes even better than "Rheinriesling".

Cultivation: The fungus-resistant variety should be grown in good to very good vineyard sites. It is insensitive to dryness.
