Calardis Musqué
Add to wish listOrigin: The variety was bred in Germany in 1964 at the Julius Kühn Institute, Institute for Vine Breeding Geilweilerhof (Siebeldingen), by Gerhardt Alleweldt and received plant variety protection in 2023.
Interbreeding: Bacchus × Seyval Blanc.
Characteristics: Calardis Musqué has medium, upright growth. The variety tends to produce poor shoots and coulure, which can lead to fluctuating yields and requires increased attention in the vineyard. Overall, up to 50–60% of plant protection products can be saved with this variety. Botrytis infection is rather rare and often leads to noble rot, making the variety suitable for sweet wine styles.
Resistance:
Grape: The grapes are comparable to Riesling, mostly loose-berried with rather small berries. Shattering and poor fruit set are typical of the variety and affect yield stability.
Wine: The wines are full-bodied with lively, ripe acidity and a distinctive muscat tone, sometimes reminiscent of Traminer. The bouquet is exotic and complex with aromas of passion fruit, mango, pineapple and physalis. The consistently high quality of the wines over the years is particularly noteworthy, which makes Calardis Musqué particularly attractive despite its demanding cultivation characteristics.
