New resistant grape variety Carillon

We are pleased to present the new fungus-resistant red wine variety Carillon (FR 628-2005r), which was bred at the Staatlichen Weinbauinstitut Freiburg (Geramany). Carillon is the first variety from a highly resistant cross-breeding series with the wild species Muscadinia, for which a plant variety protection has been applied for.
The wild variety Muscadinia, native to the warm and humid climate of Florida, has been successfully interbred, although it is extremely challenging to obtain fertile offspring in the breeding process. Based on the existing resistance loci, the successful interbreeding of this wild variety into Carillon is expected to significantly improve resistance to powdery mildew compared to previous PIWI crosses. In the course of the plant variety rights procedure at the European Plant Variety Office CPVO in Angers (France), the WBI decided on the name ‘Carillon’, which means ‘tower bell’.
The new grape variety is characterised by its very strong resistance to downy mildew, powdery mildew and botrytis. Thanks to the robust berry skin, the variety has shown excellent resistance to the cherry vinegar fly in cultivation to date, and the variety also impresses with an outstanding wine quality. The wine is very fruity and aromatic, with intense cherry and berry aromas. The colour is very intense, and on the palate the red wine is soft and full-bodied at the same time.
Carillon is characterised by an upright, medium-vigour growth and low side shoot growth. It buds about ten days later than Pinot Noir, but reaches blossom a little earlier and is hardly susceptible to couluring or grape stem rot. The ripening period is about ten days after Pinot Noir, as the must weight develops more slowly. Carillon produces a yield of 80-110 kg/a with 85-100 degrees Oechsle and, due to its late ripeness, requires very good vineyard sites.
We propagate the variety in coordination with the breeder, the Weinbauinstitut Freiburg. For the planting of the vines, appropriate cultivation contracts must be concluded between the winegrowers and the Weinbauinstitut Freiburg.
