Origin: Souvignier Gris is a fungus-resistant white wine variety newly bred in 1983. The variety was bred in 1983 by Norbert Becker at the Staatlichen Weinbauinstitut Freiburg.

Interbreeding: Cabernet Sauvignon and Bronner were originally assumed to be the parent varieties. However, a genome analysis commissioned by the Staatlichen Weinbauinstitut Freiburg in 2019 has clearly shown that the parent variety is Seyval Blanc and the father variethy is Zähringer.

Characteristics: The shoot tip is heavily white-woolly haired with a faint anthocyanin colouration. The shoot growth is medium. The underside of the leaves is slightly hairy. Due to the high resistance, only a small number of plant protection measures are necessary. The loose foliage and the robust berry skins reduce the risk of Botrytis infection even in areas with higher rainfall. A disadvantage is that grape stem rot and grape wilt occasionally occur. The variety is very fertile and requires grape thinning in many years.

Resistance:

Downy mildew: niedrig mittel high sehr hoch

Powdery mildew: niedrig mittel high sehr hoch

Botrytis: niedrig mittel hoch very high

Grape: The grape is medium to large and mostly shouldered with a grape cluster. The loosely berried grape bears pink berries with a thick berry skin and has a very fleshy pulp. There is no uniform grape zone and many smaller, later grapes.

Wine: The PIWI white wines from Souvignier Gris are strong and full-bodied. In character they are mostly neutral or only slightly fruity, similar to Pinot Gris or Pinot Blanc.
