Origin: Pinot nova is an interbreeding from the vine breeding of the "Höhere Bundeslehranstalt und Bundesamt für Wein- und Obstbau" in Klosterneuburg under the direction of Ferdinand Regner.

Interbreeding: Pinot Noir x Malverina
Malverina is a Czech new cross of 4 varieties, combining Frühroter Veltliner and Merlot with resistance carriers (Rakiš (Villard Blanc x Frühroter Veltliner) × (Merlot x Seibel 13666)).

Characteristics: Varietal characteristics are similar to the parent variety Pinot Noir. In addition, Pinot nova has very good winter frost resistance and regenerates well after spring frosts. There is also good tolerance to phomopsis, black rot and red burner. There is a slight tendency for berries to burst after autumn rains. The piwi variety is vigorous and insensitive to sunburn.

Resistance:

Downy mildew: niedrig mittel hoch very high

Powdery mildew: niedrig mittel high sehr hoch

Botrytis: niedrig mittel high sehr hoch

Grape: The grape is medium sized and medium dense structure with one to three wings. The blue-black berries are round, medium sized with uncolored flesh and a low single berry weight.

Wine: Pinot nova produces fruity, low-acid red wines. The tannin content requires a longer ripening, which is also very successful in wooden casks. The main aromas are sour cherry with a clear resemblance to the variety Sankt Laurent (half-sibling variety). The wine has a good color intensity, more intense than that of Pinot Noir. The wine qualities have been sensory tested for years and often judged equally good and sometimes better than Pinot Noir.

Cultivation: The variety is rather strong-growing and needs good vineyard sites. The variety is more suitable for temperate climates and less well cultivated in very hot conditions. For a red wine with a strong character, a Pinot Noir location should be selected. The grapes reach high quality when they can undergo a slow final ripening.
